Filipino Breakfast at “Silog Time” With FlippFamily

Silog is a traditional Filipino breakfast from the Philippines!

Doug and I attended Flipp Family’s Silog Time event where we had Filipino breakfast called Silog.

“Silog” is a breakfast dish from the Philippines that comprises of rice or garlic fried rice, egg, and a meat of your choice!

Surprisingly, there were MORE delicious treats than JUST the silog: ube pancakes, berries, ube halaya (jam), and some tropical fruit drinks!

Ingredients:
Beef tapa:
• Boneless ribeye strips
• ½ cup soy sauce
• ½ cup calamansi
• 4 cloves diced garlic (or MORE!)
• 1 tsp ground pepper
• 1 tbsp oil

Longganisa patties:
• 8 minced garlic cloves
• 1 cup sugar
• ¼ cup vinegar
• 2 tsp paprika
• ¼ tsp pepper
• 2 tsp salt
• 1 lb ground pork
• 1 egg
• 1 cup breadcrumbs
• 1 tbsp oil

Garlic Fried Rice:
• 2 cups day-old white rice
• 8 garlic cloves, minced
• 1 tbsp oil

To Complete The Silog Plate:
• Eggs (as many as you’d like)
• Pinch of salt
• Pinch of freshly cracked black pepper

Directions:
Beef Silog:
1. Put the ribeye strips into a large bowl and pour in the soy sauce, calamansi, garlic, and ground pepper. Mix it up and marinate the meat overnight.
2. The next morning, heat up oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Cook the beef strips until tender, and serve with garlic fried rice and egg to complete your silog plate.

Longganisa Patties:
1. In a large bowl, and mix together the minced garlic, sugar, vinegar, paprika, and salt, ground pork, egg, and breadcrumbs.
2. Combine everything thoroughly using your hands, then shape the meat into patties.
3. Heat up oil over medium heat. Cook the longganisa patties for 5-10 minutes on each side, or until charred and the patties are cooked through.
4. Serve with garlic fried rice and egg to complete your silog plate.

Garlic Fried Rice:
1. In a pan over medium heat, saute the minced garlic until fragrant. Add the rice, and cook for 5-7 minutes or until the rice is fully reheated.

Egg:
1. Cook the eggs any way you’d like, but I prefer to cook mine over-easy with my silog plate 😉 All you need is a pinch of salt and freshly ground black pepper!

Special Notes:
All you need to start a silog plate is rice (either plain or garlic fried rice), an egg, and a meat of your choice. From there, you can make countless Filipino silog variants!
